Commonly Misspelled Words

This week when you hear our favorite radio voice, Mike Abbondanza, be listening for some references to misspelled words. Here it is for you non-radio-listening, Spotify-streaming types:

“That’s just wrong! Wrong with a captital-R… or is it a W?”

It got us thinking… what are other commonly misspelled words? Here are 10 of our favorite examples:

  1. Recieve — remember that it’s “i before e except after c.” Correct spelling: Receive.
  2. Definately — also sometimes “defiantly,” which is just too harsh. correct spelling: definitely.
  3. Wendesday — anyone else say “wed – nes – day” in their head? Just me? Correct spelling: Wednesday.
  4. Sandwhich — the extra “h” is not actually necessary. Correct spelling: sandwich.
  5. Seperate — easily corrected by another in-your-head pronunciation: “sep-AH-rate.” Correct spelling: separate.
  6. They’re, there, & their — easily the easiest words to misuse. “They’re” = “they are;” “There” is for places; “their” is a possessive pronoun.
  7. Principal or principle? — remember that your principal at school is your “pal”; your principles are your values or standards.
  8. Tommorow — this one is especially fun to misspell while writing in cursive. Correct spelling: tomorrow.
  9. Goverment — you actually have to “govern” to have a government. So don’t forget the “n” in there!
  10. Beutiful — here’s a fun video to help you remember this one, beautiful:

What words do you find yourself misspelling (or Googling to get right)?

Bigger & Better: Trunk or Treat 2018

We loved Trunk or Treat 2018!

Trunk or Treat 2018

Easily our favorite day of the year, we here at Newton Nissan South love getting to see our community turn out for Trunk or Treat. It’s also an important day for us, because it is a day that we don’t promote ourselves. Instead, we promote our community. This year, the Cascade High School Band Boosters helped us decorate over 40 trunks that we filled with enough candy for all the afternoon’s visitors! In return, we were able to donate some funds to help them continue to grow their program.

Trunk or Treat

Additionally, the National Honor Society partnered up with our second community organization, the Humane Society of Shelbyville-Bedford County! They teamed up to also decorate several trunks to join in the fun. And, of course, our very own Newton Panda Bear made her annual appearance!

We could not have asked for better weather for Trunk or Treat this year! The students & their cars showed up early and began setting up: decorating their cars, trucks, and SUVs into spooky entrances, fun characters, science labs, and music-filled pop culture references, such as The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars. We had a friendly competition over whose trunk was the best, and we brought in fun bouncy houses and, new for this year, a mechanical bull for the kids to enjoy! We had a much bigger turnout this year, and we were so proud and happy to host everyone and serve lots of pizza and candy for a few hours!

Trunk or Treat Trunk or Treat

One of the winners was an adorable little white car, simply decorated as…well watch this video to find out:

So, why do we do this?

Because we here believe that our customers are more important than our cars; our community is more valuable than our bottom line. And to show this, we simply want to be a part of each others’ lives. And Trunk or Treat is one of those days that allows us to host a fun event, get to know our community, and give back.

Thank you for being a part of our community!

We hope to see you next year at Trunk or Treat 2019!

Community Spotlight: Boys & Girls Club Bedford County

Boys & Girls Club Bedford County

Newton Nissan South is proud to sponsor local non-profits, schools, sports teams, and community events in and around Bedford County! This month in the spotlight is the Boys & Girls Club of Bedford County! You may recognize this name as a national program, but did you know that they are located right in our backyard here in Shelbyville as well?

Their Mission

The primary goal of the Boys & Girls Club here is to provide year round after school programming for kids ages 5-13. Unlike other programs, the Boys & Girls Club is not limited by the poverty line on who can be helped. Instead, it is a heavily discounted program so that anyone in need can receive affordable after school care for their children.

What They Do

The Boys & Girls Club is a well-rounded program that not only seeks to help students academically, but also give them life skills that they can take home with them. On top of homework help, they plan field trips like swimming and bowling to keep the kids active. They rely on volunteers helping out with this, many of whom are TN Promise college students. If you are interested in volunteering or enrolling your child, you can call their office at (931) 735-6525.

Upcoming Event: End of Summer Carnival

The way Newton Nissan South got involved with the Boys & Girls Club was by becoming a sponsor of their upcoming event, the End of Summer Carnival on July 27th. This is an annual event to celebrate the kids with awards, games, and a water slide. Director Shawn Hart said, “They’ve worked hard, so we plan this event to celebrate them!”

How You Can Help

Right now, the Boys & Girls Club is located at 1055 Madison Street in Shelbyville. “Our sign and building is very small,” Shawn said, “so we are hoping to buy an old school building in the next five years.” Right now, they are only able to hold about 100 kids at a time, and they cannot provide meals without a working kitchen. The school would allow them to provide meals, have more kids involved in the program, and have a full gym to use!

If you would like to donate to the Bedford County Club, please visit this website: https://www.bgcrc.net/campaigns/custom-donation/donate/

Toward the bottom of the page where it says “Which company or program will you be submitting to?”, simply enter “Shelbyville” or “Bedford County Club” so that your donation is allocated!

We are so happy to help the Boys & Girls Club of Bedford County, and we hope you will help them too!

3rd Annual Student Car Giveaway

Newton Nissan Car Giveaway

Good Grades = Free Car

Ashley, a 10th grader from Community High School in Shelbyville, won a brand new car this weekend because of her good grades. Ashley was so shocked, saying, “I just can’t believe it…I mean, ME?!” She will be getting her permit soon, and is excited to begin driving her new car! Her little sister and mom were also surprised and thankful for this gift to their family. The annual Newton Nissan Car Giveaway event is open to all students enrolled in a Tennessee high school. Since the program started in 2009, Newton Nissan has given away ten cars to students in the Nashville area.

About the Grand Prize

The grand prize was a 2018 Nissan Versa, valued at $15,330. “Newton Nissan pays for both the car and sales taxes, so Ashley doesn’t have to pay anything for her new car,” says Mike Abbondanza, Newton Nissan’s Vice President. Students enter the contest by bringing in their report card from the most recent school year. Students increase their chances of winning by making good grades, since they receive one entry per “A” on their report card.

Other Fun Happenings This Year

But there were more prizes to be had! We had several trivia rounds for other students to win smaller prizes like gift cards and very large candy bars!

Add that to free food and a drawing for a free oil change for the parents — it was a fun night for all! We love celebrating all these students, who have worked so hard all year long, and we especially love giving back to our community in this way. If you weren’t able to join us this year, we hope that you will next year for the Newton Nissan Car Giveaway!

Congratulations again to Ashley!

Jaci’s Favorite Things: The 2018 Nissan Rogue

2018 Nissan Rogue

Local Grammy-nominated artist Jaci Velasquez recently took the 2018 Nissan Rogue for a month-long test drive, and she rated it in 2nd place among her top three favorite vehicles! From its advanced technology to its sleek, black exterior and leather interior, Jaci loved this vehicle. We think you will too!

“The Superhero”

Jaci dubbed this Rogue more than just a car — “It’s a superhero!” Her primary reason for calling it a superhero is the technology. This begins with the key fob, by which you can not only unlock and lock your car, but you can also enter your car without pressing the button at all. As long as the key fob is on your person, you and your passenger can get in the car by pressing the button on the door handle. In addition, with the key fob, you can remotely start up your car! “Who needs keys? You’ve got superheroes like Nissan!”

All the technology you want

On the inside, the Rogue doesn’t miss a beat in continuing to impress with the best lineup of technology. First, the touch screen houses all you need to stay connect: Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Navigation, and the Rear-View camera. In addition to the rear-view, though, is the front view camera. This shows you the sides and front of your vehicle, and warns you of potential objects. Behind the wheel, you can also choose what you want to see, which is also where you are warned when you drift lanes. The steering wheel itself will shake to alert you to stay in your lane alongside a couple of beeps.

“This car practically drives itself!”

2018 Nissan Rogue

“But the best part of the 2018 Nissan Rogue is the ProPilot Assist,” Jaci says.  This driver assist technology may not let you fall asleep with your passengers on long car rides (yet), but what it can do are these key things:

  1. Keep your speed the same, even in slowing and speeding traffic
  2. Maintain a set distance between your car and the vehicle ahead
  3. Keep you in your lane (note: you must keep your hands on the wheel)

You simply press the blue button (pictured) on the steering wheel, set your speed, and you’re all set! You will see if there’s a car in front, what your actual speed is, and if you are in your lane. Again, you still have to stay focused on the road ahead, but with your feet and hands fairly relaxed as you go!

We love the 2018 Nissan Rogue!

Shelbyville Student Wins Free Car for Good Grades

For the second straight year, Newton Nissan South has given away a car to a student with good grades. This year’s giveaway story was especially heartwarming.

Allyson Bivvins, the winner from the Shelbyville location, is a junior from Victory Baptist Academy. She succeeded in school this year despite personal trials. Allyson’s father just got out of the hospital on Friday for his first round of cancer treatment. Because of the crowd and potential for germs at the car giveaway event, Allyson’s father sat inside his car while the car giveaway was going on inside. When Allyson’s name was drawn, Allyson’s mom rushed out to the car to tell her dad the good news.

The annual contest, hosted by Newton Motor Group’s two Nissan dealerships, is open to all students enrolled in a middle Tennessee high school. Students enter the contest by bringing in their report card, and they get an entry for each “A” on their report card. Newton Nissan in Gallatin has given away a car for 8 straight years. Their newest Nissan location in Shelbyville has now hosted the giveaway for two straight years.

A 2017 Nissan Versa, valued at $15,370, was the grand prize at each location. “Newton Nissan pays for both the car and sales taxes, so the winning students don’t have to pay anything for their new cars,” says Mike Abbondanza, Newton Motor Group’s Vice President. Producer Eddie from the Bobby Bones Show came in to DJ the event and officially give the car to Allyson.
